FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling), also known as FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication), is a material extrusion process. A thermoplastic filament is melted in a heated nozzle and deposited track by track onto a build platform, one layer at a time. Overhangs rest on a support material that industrial systems feed from a second nozzle; it is later dissolved or broken away. Materials range from ABS, ASA, PC, nylon and fiber-filled compounds to ULTEM (PEI) and PEEK, which require a heated build chamber. Parts are tough and dimensionally stable, but they show visible layer lines, reduced strength in the Z direction and less fine detail than powder bed or resin processes.
FDM is broadly represented in our catalog. Stratasys covers everything from office machines to large-format systems with the F120, F170, F370 and F770, the Fortus 250mc to 900mc, F900 and F3300; Markforged (Mark Two, X7, FX20) adds continuous fiber reinforcement (CFR). BigRep (ONE, PRO, STUDIO), BCN3D (Sigma, Epsilon, Omega), Raise3D (Pro2, Pro3, E2, RMF500), 3DGence and the pellet-fed 3D Systems EXT Titan complete the field. Frequently traded second-hand are the Fortus 400mc and 450mc, uPrint and Dimension, as well as the Markforged Mark Two and X7.
When buying a used FDM machine, check the condition of the print heads and nozzles, the operating hours and the build platform calibration. Many industrial systems are tied to manufacturer filament via chip or cartridge, software licenses (GrabCAD Print, Eiger) may be device-bound or subscription-based, and heated-chamber machines deserve a close look at heating elements, insulation and electrical requirements. Below you will find the technical data of all 174 FDM models in our catalog, together with those currently offered second-hand.
