Desktop Metal: 17 models
Desktop Metal, based in Burlington, Massachusetts, develops metal and sand printers built on binder jetting and Bound Metal Deposition (BMD). The Studio System, now in its second generation as the Studio System 2, extrudes metal-filled rods and sinters the green parts in the matching Furnace; the first generation also required the Debinder. The Shop System is a binder jetting printer for mid-volume production, paired with the Powder Station for depowdering and powder recycling, while the Production System P-1 and P-50 use Single Pass Jetting for high throughput. The 2021 acquisition of ExOne added the InnoventX, X25Pro and X160Pro metal printers and the S-Max and S-Print sand printers for foundry cores and molds. Fiber is a composite printer based on automated fiber placement. Customers include toolmakers, automotive suppliers, medical device companies, foundries and research institutes.
The Studio System and Shop System are the most common used machines, usually sold together with the Furnace or Powder Station; ExOne systems surface from foundries and universities. In 2025 Desktop Metal was acquired by Nano Dimension, and the ownership and service structure has changed since then, so buyers should establish who currently supplies spare parts, software and consumables before committing.
Materials are largely proprietary: Studio rods, Shop System powders and binders come from the Desktop Metal range, whereas the sand printers process standard foundry sands using furan or inorganic binders. The software (Fabricate, Live Suite) is partly cloud-based, so the licensing status needs checking. Wear items are print heads on the binder jetting machines, nozzles on the Studio System, and heating elements and retort in the Furnace. The Furnace and the production systems require process gas, extraction and a three-phase power supply. Below you will find the technical data of all 17 Desktop Metal models in our catalog, and which of them are currently available used.
