Desktop Metal Studio System (1. Generation) — Technical data
The first Studio System was Desktop Metal's 2017 entry into metal printing for office and workshop use and shipped in volume from late 2018. It consisted of three units: a printer extruding bound metal rods, a debinder in which the binder is dissolved with solvent, and a sintering furnace. Supported materials were 17-4PH stainless steel, 4140 low-alloy steel, H13 tool steel and copper. Since 2021 the Studio System 2 has replaced the line; it needs no separate debinder, and Desktop Metal offered existing customers an upgrade. The manufacturer no longer publishes reliable technical data for the old system.
Anyone considering a used first-generation Studio System should check that all three components are present and working and whether the upgrade to the second generation has already been carried out. Solvents for the debinder are subject to storage and exhaust requirements. Material rods, spare parts and software access for the old platform are uncertain after the insolvency; without a written commitment from Arc Impact the system is better valued as a parts donor.
