Stratasys FDM Maxum — Technical data
The FDM Maxum is the large-format FDM system that Stratasys introduced at the end of 2000 as a development of the Quantum. It keeps the Quantum's MagnaDrive motion system, in which the extrusion head glides on a cushion of air, and its 600 × 500 × 600 mm build volume, but adds WaterWorks soluble support. Reports at the time put it about 50 percent faster than earlier Stratasys systems. It prints ABS, and jobs are sent over the network with Insight. Compared with the Quantum, the Maxum is the more practical choice, because supports can be washed out and cavities come out clean more easily. The machine is discontinued.
When buying a used Maxum, transport, floor space and the dedicated 50 A, 208–240 V supply come first. After that, look at the condition of the MagnaDrive system and extrusion heads, the chamber heating and the operating hours. Equally important are a wash tank for WaterWorks, a working Insight PC and a source of ABS material and spare parts, since Stratasys no longer lists regular service for this generation.
