Stratasys FDM 8000 — Technical data
The FDM 8000 was Stratasys' entry into large build volumes in 1997: according to that year's annual report, it combines the speed of the FDM 2000 with a build volume of about 457 × 457 × 610 mm. It built prototypes in ABS. Unlike the FDM 2000 and 3000, it runs on 208–240 V at 10 A, which simplifies connection in Europe. For large single parts it is a better fit than its smaller siblings; however, the Quantum followed as early as 1998 with about 30 percent more build volume and considerably higher speed. Stratasys now lists the FDM 8000 in its legacy support section.
A used FDM 8000 needs space and transport suited to a large machine. Before buying, ask for a test print over the full height and check the heating, axes and extrusion head. It also matters whether ABS material in a suitable form can be obtained and whether a PC with working control software is included. Spare parts are only available from used stock.
