Steinbichler COMET L3D — Technical data
The COMET L3D is a compact structured light sensor from Steinbichler Optotechnik of Neubeuern, which appeared around 2010/2011 as the entry model of the COMET range. It works with a single camera and projects fringe patterns with blue LED light, which is less affected by ambient light than white light. At the end of 2011 the COMET L3D 5M followed with a 5-megapixel camera, pulsed LED and a measuring field of up to 500 mm; it captures up to five million points per shot. It usually sits on a tripod and can be combined with photogrammetry for large objects. Since 2015 Steinbichler has belonged to ZEISS, and the successor is the ZEISS COMET L3D 2.
When buying used, first clarify whether a basic model or an L3D 5M is offered and which measuring field lenses are included, as resolution and part size depend on them. Ask to see the latest calibration report, and check calibration plate, LED projector and lenses for scratches and fogging. A working software installation with dongle and a computer that still runs it are important; ask ZEISS beforehand whether older Steinbichler licences can be transferred or updated. Tripod, cables and case should be included.
