The SLM 280 HL was the mid-size model of SLM Solutions' HL generation and is the forerunner of today's SLM 280 series. In its 280 × 280 × 360 mm build envelope, a 400 W or 1000 W fibre laser works, or alternatively two 400 W lasers; besides the fine focus of 80–120 µm, the data sheet lists a second one of 700 µm. It was approved for stainless and tool steels, cobalt-chrome, superalloys, aluminium and titanium. It is discontinued and no longer listed on the manufacturer's websites.

The 280 HL turns up on the used market regularly. Key points are year of manufacture and laser configuration, the condition of scanner, protective glass and filter, and whether control and build software still run and are licensed.
