The Metal X is the printer of the Metal X System, which Markforged introduced in 2017 and which works without a powder bed or laser. It extrudes polymer-bound metal powder into a 300 × 220 × 180 mm build volume, together with a ceramic release material; the green parts are then debound in the Wash-1 and sintered in a Sinter-1 or Sinter-2. Materials are 17-4PH, the tool steels H13, A2 and D2, Inconel 625 and copper. The 2021 Gen 2 added an external touchscreen, door sensors and better chamber insulation. Markforged stopped selling it on 30 June 2026; support continues until the end of 2030.

A used Metal X can only be used with a debinder and a sintering furnace; anyone not buying a complete system must budget for both. Check the nozzles, print bed and vacuum, the storage condition of material spools and which materials are enabled in the Eiger account. Because of the discontinuation, clarify the remaining subscription and Success Plan term and spare parts supply up to 2030.
